A Staffordshire figure of General Codrington circa 1855
The Staffordshire potters were very patriotic like the rest of the Country
and particularly when Britain was at war in the Crimea. They produced a
spectacular figure of General Codrington who had shown great courage at
Alma and Inkerman whilst in command of the Light Division. In 1855 he became
Commander-in-Chief of the British troops in the Crimea, he fought at Sebastapol,
was a member of Parliament for Greenwich in 1857 and became
Governor of Gibraltar.
Everything about this stunning and very rare figure is first-class;
colours, modelling, gilding, painting, glaze and it is in marvellous condition
without any restoration.
