A Staffordshire Figure of Jemmy Wood circa - 1844
Jemmy Wood took over The Gloucester Old bank
(which later became today's Lloyds Bank)
and the family drapery business in 1802.
The bank had been founded by his Grandfather in 1716
Jemmy was Sheriff of Gloucester in 1811 and 1813 but never became Mayor
because of the expense of office.
He was a national figure and famous for his spectacular meanness -
it is said that he was the inspiration for the Dickens character Scrooge.
At his death in 1836, at the age of 80, he was reputed
to be the richest commoner in the land.
This led to legal arguements over his estate and the case went
to the House of Lords in 1844.
Our Staffordshire Potters wouldn't miss an opportunity like this.
They produced this delightful figure of Jemmy, with his distinctive face
and pot Belly! What a character.
This lovely, colourful example is in excellent condition,
with no damage or restoration.
