A Staffordshire Figure The Elephant of Siam - circa 1840
At Wombwell's Menagerie.
This wonderful figure is based on "The Elephant of Siam",
performed at the Adelphi in 1829.
A Mr.Hemmings played the role of the Prince,
who escapes his captors,
after our elephant wrenches the bars from the window
and he slides down the trunk onto her back.
Wombwell's menagerie secured the services of
"The Great Elephant of Siam" in 1830.
She was of course star of the show and toured our land
and inevitably our Staffordshire potters made their version
to be sold in the fairground shops.
And what a fine job they made.
This example is fabulous.
The modelling is as good as you could hope to find,
the enamels are brilliant
and the gilding is almost as clean as when it was applied.
What else could we want?
Yes, there is no damage and no restoration.
